The weather has turned cold for plein air painting and the heaters inside the barn/pavillion at Laura's were such a welcome sight. We had a really good session. Starting out with a piece that Susan finished at home from the previous session. I love the way she treated the trees almost as a whole shape and the trucks are come with blue shadows that are not in any repetitive. It's gorgeous.
Rita , always the unexpected, painted Santa.
and Laura finished her dramatic still life of the squash from her garden
I think the way she handles the values makes this so successful. It's so easy to let a painting be dominated by middle values. Here she has lots of darkest darks and lightest lights.
Joyce brought this painting of her bougainvillea. She didn't have a photo to work from so she invented the sun falling on the colors of the plant. Gorgeous color.
Cathy Baca brought in this landscape that she painted several months ago. She stopped looking at it for a while then brought it back to correct things that she felt were not working. I think she made some real improvements. I forgot to photograph her tree. I'll do it this week.
And speaking of trees, here is a work in progress from Amalia. It's the oak at Cathy's house and is really coming along.
Saturday night was the opening of the 6x6 show at the Randy Higbee Gallery. There was a great turnout and Joyce and Rita's paintings looked fantastic! Joyce has more photos that I will post later but here's a start. Congratulations! It was a beautiful show.
